Record holding free-diver, Tanya Street, has been teaching the Telegraph's Charles Starmer-Smith the craft and breathing techniques involved in free-diving, after spending years diving in the Grand Cayman where she was born.

After spending years diving in Grand Cayman, it is no wonder that Tanya Streeter was destined to a life in the underwater world, and after setting a new world record dive in 2001, the free-diver recently spent some time teaching the basics to the Telegraph's Charles Starmer-Smith, who was inspired by the story of Luc Besson's, The Big Blue.

Streeter and Starmer-Smith met in the crystal clear waters of the popular scuba diving holiday destination, Turks and Caicos, in the luxurious Aman resort, Amanyara.

After demonstrating the techniques required for breathing correctly before going underwater Streeter explained: "Try imagining something as simple as walking around your house. And remember: your body telling you it wants to breathe is a natural reflex, but it doesn't mean you need to."

Streeter set the world record free-dive of 525ft (160m) in 2002 in Turks and Caicos and eight years later, the incredible athlete returned to the island to give talks to, teach and inspire travellers looking to undergo diving in the Caribbean.

Born in the Cayman Islands, Streeter was educated in the UK and after marrying her English husband, the couple moved back to the islands where Streeter carried out her passion diving in Grand Cayman.

Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and home to an array of breathtaking diving sites and a turtle farm in the West Bay district where 1,800 turtles are produced each year and released in to the wild.

Turks and Caicos are situated in the West Indies and comprise eight main islands and 20 smaller islands with one of the world's longest coral reefs and thriving marine world.

The luxurious Amanyara Resort is a secluded hideaway on the island of Providencials which offers idyllic surroundings from travellers enjoying Caribbean holidays. The beachfront resort offers elegant accommodation and high end facilities on the shores of the pristine Malcolm Beach.
