The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration has released a draft management plan for the Flower Banks Garden National Marine Sanctuary, focusing on environmental issues and the impact of scuba diving holidays and fishing activities.
The draft management plan and environmental assessment has been released by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico which will examine the need for study focusing on the impact of scuba diving holidays and fishing.
Members of the public will be able to put forward their opinions and comments about plans to expand the sanctuary boundaries, the development of additional reefs and banks, plus thoughts on if a study should be carried out to assess any damage caused to the stunning marine park caused by tourists on scuba diving holidays.
Director of the NOOA, Daniel J. Basta, said: "The draft management plan is the result of a collaborative effort that involved many hours of hard work from sanctuary staff and from the sanctuary's advisory council.
"We welcome further public review and comment as we go forward with the important job of managing this special undersea place for future generations to enjoy."
The new plan will update the management plan originally published in 1991 and will address actions in which sanctuary staff will be expected to undertake over the next ten years.
"This plan is centered on the need to manage marine resources for biodiversity conservation," explained George Schmahl, the Sanctuary Superintendent. "This is an evolving approach that stresses conservation of sanctuary resources important to the region's biological communities and integrates compatible human uses."
The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary is situated in the heart of the Gulf of Mexico and offers an abundance of diving sites for holidaymakers and professionals. The sanctuary is one of 14 federally designated underwater regions protected by the NOOA and is separated into three areas.
The beautiful sites offers thriving ecosystem full of colourful coral gardens and an array of fish including barracuda, jacks, butterfly fish, parrotfish; and manta rays, eagle rays and sharks, for amateurs or professionals scuba diving in the Caribbean.
