Bringing to life an incredible world that only exists in our dreams, an inspired photographer recreated the mystical underwater civilisation of Atlantis through a unique collection of photographs depicting day-to-day life scenes of people in an amazing location under the surface: the sunken Vandenberg wreck in Florida. Those interested in seeing the exhibition will only be able to do so after donning their scuba diving gear and diving down to the depths of the sunken vessel at 145 feet under.

An awe-inspiring collection of stunning underwater photographs taken by professional photographer Andreas Franke has been recently unveiled, but visitors will have to don their scuba diving gear if they want to see it.

Mr Franke’s unique photographic creation consists of a mythical underwater world captured in a series of amazing pictures where models recreate various scenes of day-to-day life, only surrounded by marine creatures and the blurry background of the depths of the sea, creating a striking visual effect.

Ready to recreate the legendary city of Atlantis, the photographer armed with his camera, dived down to the depths of a sunken wreck off the coast of Key West in Florida, where he drew the inspiration to create surreal civilisation that never existed. He used the popular wreck diving site as a blank canvas for his project.

The Vandenberg was a U.S. missile tracking ship that sunk back in 2009 and which has since become an attraction for eager divers enjoying scuba diving holidays in Florida and interested in exploring the wreck.

The underwater exhibition, named “The Vandenberg, Life Below the Surface” captures young lovers at an underwater cinema, ballerinas practising en barre, young children playing, an insane patient being wheeled along by a nurse and a little girl trying to catch fish with her net as though they were butterflies.

Gracing the walls of the sunken ship located seven miles off the coast of Florida, enthusiastic divers keen to see them will be able to get access to the site via a boat departing from Key West.

Encased between protective sheets of Plexiglas and a silicone seal to keep the water out, the photographs are exhibited in stainless steel frames with strong magnets to ensure they stay in place, safely attached to the sunken vessel’s walls without damaging the almost intact piece of American Naval history.

Talking proudly of his creation, Mr Franke explained how the photographs showed “'mystified scenes of the past that play in a fictional space.'”

“They are dreamworlds where you can get lost or that you can identify with. This makes a new and unexpected atmosphere.”

So don your diving gear and witness the residents of this curious underwater world in their native habitat, 145 feet under.
