It might sound like a contraption from an episode of the Thunderbirds, but an owner of a dive centre has invented and designed a new underwater glider. Glenn Faires owns the Golden Rock Dive Centre in St. Eustatius, one of the Caribbean's most popular scuba diving destinations, and he first introduced the model at the 2012 DEMA Show.
The owner of a dive centre in St. Eustatius in the Caribbean is getting ready to launch a new underwater glider, one year after he first introduced it at the DEMA Show.
Glenn Faires, owner of the Golden Rock Dive Centre, invented and designed the DiveGlider and he has carried out demos in popular scuba diving destinations including in Bonaire, Curacao, and St. Eustatius.
"When I showed it at DEMA that model was so new it had not been in the water yet," Faires explained. "The purpose of showing it was market research, which by the way was off the charts. After exhibiting my dive centre for 18 years I never had a response anything like this, no one walked past my booth with out stopping for more info."
Over the past 12 months, Faires has been testing and refining the underwater model to make it stronger and easier for divers to use.
"What we are seeing is that, experienced or beginner, everyone has the same responses: 'Lots of fun,' 'more powerful than they thought,' 'want to do it more," noted Faires.
"We are now offering what we call a 'Test Flight' similar to a discover scuba for gliding, and are now building gliders for several dive centres. We set up our website a few weeks ago."
Faires has been a scuba diving and water sports enthusiast all of his life and he believes that "buoyancy gliding could be like Kite boarding for divers".
The DiveGlider allows divers to glide through the water at a speed similar to marine life without mechanical sound. There are no batteries, electric motors or propellers and the energy comes from scuba tanks and weights.
The underwater glider is being built to order and is available to fly in St. Eustatius with Faires, who is currently seeking manufacturing, distribution and licensing agreements.
Scuba diving is a popular sport, particularly in the Caribbean, one of the world's leading scuba diving destinations.
While scuba diving in the Caribbean, divers can catch sightings of spectacular marine species such as turtles, manta rays, sea horses, dolphins, whale sharks, reef sharks, barracuda, colourful sponges, sea plants, and thousands of colourful fish.
