When it comes to exploring the underwater world, many divers head to exotic locations such as the Caribbean, but scuba diving holidays in Iceland could soon become a popular choice with diving between two tectonic plates one of the main highlights.

Iceland is not the first choice which comes to mind when planning scuba diving holidays but the European destination is becoming a popular choice for divers who are looking for unique diving sites and opportunities for spectacular underwater photographs.

One of the highlights of scuba diving holidays in Iceland is the extreme natural underwater beauty including the 80-foot crevice between two tectonic plates.

This magnificent diving site allows divers to explore the waters between the North American and Eurasian plates and enjoy scuba diving among volcanoes, hot springs, valleys and faults which occur when the plates pull apart by approximately one inch per year.
Alex Mustard from Southampton is a keen scuba diver and underwater photographer.

"The photos show diving in the unique underwater world of Iceland which, like on land, is formed by the volcanic landscape of the country," he explained.

"Many people visit Iceland to see these features on land but they also continue underwater. For a scuba diver these are spectacular places to visit - being able to fly through the clear water and explore the fault lines in three dimensions.

"I have dived all around the world and this is almost certainly the clearest water I have ever been in. Many people have an experience of vertigo from the sheer walls and clear water."

Popular diving sites dives are drawn to during their scuba diving holidays include the fresh water canyons Silfra in Thingvellir National Park, Nes and Nikulasargja, which reach depths of up 200 feet, and the Arnarnes Strytur chimney is a popular sight as a cloudy plume forms after the earth's crust ejects 80C water into 4C seawaters.

Geothermal underwater springs in Lake Kleifarvatn or Silfra and spots around the southern coast of Iceland are excellent sites to scuba dive and explore sunken shipwrecks and diving sites.
