A Guinness World Record for the largest underwater wedding was attempted by Alberto dal Lago and Karla Manguia who dived to have their wedding deep underwater in Playa del Carmen. It failed to beat the record but became the second largest of all time.
The wedding took place in Playa del Carmen, in a resort just south of Cancun, Mexico. The couple decided that an underwater wedding would be the most suitable for them due to their love of the sea and sharks. The couple also decided that when getting married underwater they would aim to break the Guinness world record for the largest underwater wedding. Unfortunately for Karla and Alberto, the wedding failed to break the record falling just short of the 261 guests needed to break the record that the wedding of Italian Couple Francesca Colombi and Giampiero Giannoccaro, had set when they got married underwater back in 20010 at Elba Island, Italy.
In an attempt to break the record, scuba divers Karla and Alberto, had invited over 300 people to their wedding and even extended an open invitation to all others in the area, with the hope that those on scuba diving holidays would also join in and be a part of the occasion. Alas this did not occur. However, the failure to break the record did not appear to have any impact on the uniqueness and joy of this underwater wedding. The couple looked ecstatic with each other throughout, and this rather unusual wedding truly was a great expression of both their love for the sea as well as for each other.
The bride and groom both looked the part with Karla Munguia diving down in a white dress and Alberto dal Lago wearing a bow tie. While the two looked radiant in classic (sort of) wedding attire, other guests also scuba dived down to the depths of the ocean wearing smart clothes. The couple gave each other their rings underwater, and kissed in the ocean before slowly making their way back up to the reception service.
The underwater ceremony took place on flip charts, with guests being able to follow the proceedings by reading the different messages presented. The underwater wedding was conducted by Civil Judge Jorge Denis and his secretary, who in order to take the ceremony had to learn scuba diving prior to the wedding.
The couple met due to their shared love of water, scuba diving, and most especially; a mutual affection for sharks. Alberto described the moment he first saw Karla, recalling that he was swimming with Bull Sharks and was shocked to see a woman doing the same. With their rather eccentric ceremony under the sea couple hoped to raise global awareness of the importance of sharks and for sharks to be protected.
