The Cayman Islands have been voted as the No.1 Best Overall Destination in the Atlantic and Caribbean for scuba diving in the 2014 Top 100 Readers' Choice Awards by Scuba Diving Magazine. The islands in the Caribbean were voted for their diving sites, diving resorts, and overall conditions for diving and underwater photography.
The Cayman Islands have triumphed in Scuba Diving magazine's 2014 Top 100 Readers' Choice Awards.
The islands were voted in first place as the Best Overall Destination in the Atlantic and Caribbean as well as numerous other scuba diving categories.
Many diving sites in the Cayman islands were listed in the "Top 100 Gold" list including the USS Kittiwake which was voted as the Best Wreck Dive, and the Bloody Bay Wall in Little Cayman was named as the Best Wall Dive.
"I think that the overall quality of our diving is hard to beat," commented Rod McDowall, the Operations Manager for Red Sail Sports in the Cayman Islands. "It's not just the variety of Cayman's diving, but the quality of the reefs, the clarity of the water, the ease of diving here and the comfort level for our guests."
The Sister Islands were ranked at the top in the Best Visibility category, and other winners include Stingray City for Best Animal Encounters; Ocean Frontiers for Best Dive Operation; and Sunset House for Best Dive Resort with the Best Bar, My Bar.
The scuba diving destination was listed in the categories of "Best Underwater Photography", "Best Wall Diving", "Overall Diving", and "Shore Diving".
"We are blessed with low-density islands with no industry or runoff which could normally affect the reef health, and in so, the visibility underwater," added Neil van Niekerk, the Manager of the Southern Cross Club on Little Cayman.
The Cayman Islands are an excellent destination for scuba diving holidays thanks to the variety of marine species, healthy coral reefs, warm waters, and fantastic visibility. The Dive 365 initiative was completed last year with the addition of 68 new diving sites, so there is now one for every day of the year.
The islands recently celebrated 25 years of its marine parks and the government has recently approved a National Conservation Law that will see the parks expanded to protect more species.
"Our reefs can compete on the highest levels, but if our resources are not protected and managed, we will end up like every other destination in the region, relying on only blue skies and sunshine to attract tourists, not exactly a rare commodity in the Caribbean," stated the owner of Ocean Frontiers, Steve Broadbelt.
