Book a scuba diving holiday in Frigate Bay, St Kitts, and enjoy a good range of dive sites. From coral reefs to ship wrecks, there are plenty of underwater adventures for both beginners and professional divers to embark on around this Caribbean island.
The tranquil island of St Kitts and its twin Nevis may not be as well known for its diving as other Caribbean holiday destinations, but many of the dive sites here are considered world-class. Pristine coral reefs, caverns and wrecks, all inhabited by an abundance of marine life, are just some of the highlights you can expect here. Many of the dive sites remain relatively untouched as St Kitts and Nevis are not heavily promoted as dive destinations at the moment, so you can enjoy well-preserved seascapes and tranquilty at your own pace.
There is a wide variety of dive resorts in St Kitts, the larger of the two islands, and if you book your scuba diving holiday in Frigate Bay, you are in an excellent position for exploring some of the best. Located on the Caribbean side, Frigate Bay South is one of the finest beaches in St Kitts, with its long stretch of golden sand and calm waters. Less than a mile west from these shores lies Frigate Bay Reef, a narrow reef which is popular for novices and experienced divers due to its different levels and rich marine life.
One of the most popular diving sites in the area, and one of the best in the Caribbean, is the River Taw Wreck, a 144-foot freighter which was sunk off St Kitts' south-western shores in1985 as a wreck site. It now lies on a flat, sandy bottom close to Basseterre harbour, and is inhabited by a good variety of sea life such as lobsters, octopus, stingrays and a wide array of fish. You may also be lucky enough to spot the occasional greenback, hawksbill or leatherback turtle here during the day, and almost certain to see several during a night dive. This is a good wreck for all diving abilities because the waters are shallow enough for beginners and the site is good fun for more advanced scuba divers to explore.
Other sites worth exploring around Frigate Bay include the wreck of the Corinthian, an old tug boat that sits upright in around 70 feet of water, and Friars Bay Reef, an easy reef dive close to the shoreline. A bit further out lies Black Coral Reef, which boasts majestic black coral trees and plenty of surprises for divers. This is just a handful of memorable dive sites around Frigate Bay.
PADI-Certified dive centres in Frigate Bay are able to provide all the training and equipment you need during your trip, and instructors will lead you to the best and most appropriate sites for your level of experience. All you need to concentrate on is enjoying St Kitts majestic underwater treasures.
