The Cayman Islands host some of the best and exciting dive sites in the world. If you are wondering what to expect from a scuba diving holiday in Cayman Brac, imagine breathtaking wall dives, pristine reefs and unique wrecks and that's just the beginning.
Is not secret that scuba diving in the Cayman Islands is second to none, offering a diverse range of dive sites and excellent underwater visibility. The islands are the exposed top of an underwater mountain, the sides of which are almost vertical in places, just a few hundred metres from shore. Ideally situated on the edge of Cayman Trench, the deepest point of the Caribbean Sea, this is a world-class wall and reef diving destination. Cayman Brac, the second largest of the three islands, hosts over 50 named sites alone, so divers will be in their element.
One of the most famous wall diving sites around Cayman Brac is Bloody Bay Wall. This is officially one of Little Cayman's sites but it is easily accessible from Cayman Brac. The drop-off begins at around 20 feet here before plunging to depths of over 6000 feet, so an exciting range of sites is available for every scuba diving level. Caves, ledges and a colourful underwater world of corals, sponges, tropical fish and other sea life puts this wall at the top of most divers' wish lists.
One of several popular wall dive sites on Cayman Brac's south side is Wilderness Wall. Exploring this dramatic drop-off is a must for experienced divers looking for pristine beauty and a plethora of marine life. The most breathtaking feature is the colossal pinnacle beyond the wall, which rises 100 feet to the surface and forms a channel along the reef. This area is inhabited by a rich variety of sea life such as Nassau groupers, schooling jacks, snappers, angelfish, turtles and stingrays, and the vibrant array of red, orange, purple and yellow corals and sponges is breathtaking.
Another exhilarating wall dive in Cayman Brac is East Chute, located off the island's north-west shores. The sand chute here leads to a beautiful wall adorned with bright red rope sponges and yellow tube sponges. This site also features the Cayman Mariner, a small wreck covered in colourful soft corals and sponges and inhabited by barracuda, turtles, green moray eels and other exciting marine life.
If wreck diving appeals to you, there are over four to choose from around Cayman Brac, but the most popular is the famous MV Capt. Keith Tibbetts, the only Russian warship in the Western Hemisphere that is accessible to divers. This 330 foot vessel was sunk intentionally in 1996 as an artificial reef, and is home to over 100 species of marine life. The ship's bow lies in 85 feet of water, the stern lies at 60 feet and the radar tower at around 25ft, making it a great dive for both beginners and more experienced divers.
Tarpon Reef, Greenhouse Reef, Treehouse Reef, Lynn's Reef and Burt Boulders are just some of the beautiful reef dives available in Cayman Brac, whilst Treasure Trove is an amazing dive featuring narrow channels and tunnels made from a magnificent hard coral formation.
This is just a handful of the many accessible sites that dive centres in Cayman Brac will lead you to if you have the right diving qualifications. If you are a beginner, or require further training, courses and certification can be provided once you are there, enabling you to make the most of your diving holiday In Cayman Brac and enjoy its many underwater treasures.
