Bermuda is the wreck diving capital of the Atlantic, but there is more to discover beneath its clear waters. Underwater caves, extensive coral reefs and rich marine life are also available here. Book a scuba diving holiday in St George's and give it a go.
Popular with diving enthusiasts from all over the world, Bermuda offers some of the best opportunities for shallow, reef and wreck diving. This beautiful island chain is surrounded by over 200 miles of pristine reefs, and over 300 wrecks, some of which date back as far as the 1600's, lie scattered in the clear, warm waters. Combine this with an abundance of marine life and you have a world-class scuba diving holiday destination.
The historic parish of St George's, located on the eastern side of the Bermuda island chain, is a good base for scuba diving because there are plenty of exciting dive sites to explore close by. One of the most beautiful is the Cathedral, the largest of a series of caverns, named so because of the large underwater dome which is flooded by sunlight through its "windows". Large schools of parrot fish, tarpon and other fish reside here.
One of the most popular diving areas off the eastern end of the island is Flatts Bridge, which is suitable for all diving levels. This beautiful reef structure lies in calm, shallow waters and is covered in corals and inhabited by an abundance of sea life.
Other sites worth exploring include Devil's Hole, where you will find all sorts of marine creatures which often cannot be seen in the outer reefs because they prefer shallow, sheltered waters, and the North Rock area, which lies seven miles from the east end of the island and hosts the largest coral reefs in Bermuda. The surrounding waters are full of wrecks, many of which have been destroyed over time by the Atlantic waves. There is still plenty of exciting underwater exploration for divers, though, as many engine parts, propeller blade and anchors can be seen here. There is also a myriad of sea life around this area.
One dive site not to miss around St George's waters is the wreck of Cristobal Colon, the largest of Bermuda's shipwrecks. This transatlantic Spanish vessel was one of the most luxurious cruise ships of her time before she met her fate on Bermuda's shallow coral reefs in 1936. These are just some of the highlights of a scuba diving holiday in St George's.
