A team of spinal cord injury researchers and Paralympic athletes visited the Cayman Islands last week as part of a Johns Hopkins scientific medical study on the effects scuba diving has on people with physical and mental disabilities.

A group of researchers from St Matthews University and athletes from Red Sail Sports visited the Cayman Islands last week as part of a study which focused on the effects that scuba diving can have on disabled people.

The team of spinal cord injury researchers, veterans and Paralympic athletes from the medical school teamed up with researchers from the Cody Unser Foundation to raise awareness about the effectiveness of scuba diving activities in the process of rehabilitation, rejuvenation and reintegration of people who live with a disability.

The research was carried out as part of a John Hopkins scientific medical study and a film was screened of presenting the movie: "Cody: The First Steps", which is a documentary on the life of Cody Unser, a certified scuba diver, who was paralysed as a result of a rare spinal cord inflammation; Transverse Myelitis.

Cody has raised awareness on issues which relate to disability since 1999 and the positive effects that scuba diving can have on people with physical and mental disabilities.

The film, narrated by Glenn Close, was screened at St. Matthews University and was followed by a live panel discussion with doctors from the scientific study, the dive teams and Cody.

The Cayman Islands are made up of three main island located in the west Caribbean Sea, 180 miles south of Cuba, and are a very popular destination for scuba diving holidays.

The islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, are a British Overseas territory which boast several pristine white sand beaches including the Seven Mile Beach and a number of scuba diving sites. Diving in the Cayman Islands is particularly popular because of its wreck diving sites which were made even more popular after the recent sinking of the USS Kittiwake naval ship which took place in January this year in order to create an artificial reef and a beautiful wreck diving site.
